There's an old adage that says "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." What if, instead of trying to keep the doctor away, you ended up BECOMING the doctor?
First grade students at Berkshire Elementary recently traded their pencils for stethoscopes during an exciting “Doctor Day” event. Dressed as doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals, the young learners spent the day rotating through five hands-on “operation classrooms,” where they used their knowledge of the human body to complete themed crafts, games, and puzzles.
Each station gave students the chance to apply what they had learned in science lessons, exploring how different parts of the body work together while practicing teamwork and problem-solving.
The learning didn’t stop there—students returned the following day for special visits from parent volunteers who work in the medical field. These guests shared stories about their professions and explained how their roles help keep the community healthy and safe.
The two-day event concluded with a visit from local firefighter paramedics, who gave an up-close look at their safety gear and allowed students to step inside an ambulance to learn how emergency responders help during critical moments.
“Doctor Day” gave Berkshire’s first graders a fun and memorable way to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences—while celebrating the everyday heroes who make a difference in the community.
Thanks to the numerous fundraising efforts that our community has taken part in through PTO, the money raised from those events helped cover the supplies needed to turn our first graders into doctors and nurses. Items such as hair caps, gloves, masks, stethoscopes, hospital backdrop, pre-cut body shapes, medical trays, etc. helped make this as life like as possible!
